Why?
Influenza (flu) is a contagious disease spread by coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions. Flu symptoms may include: fever/chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and runny or stuffy nose. Some people, including young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions, are at risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
Who?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine. While everyone should be vaccinated, it is especially important for: (1) young children, (2) adults 65 and older, (3) pregnant women, and (4) people with certain medical conditions, including asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease, blood disorders, diabetes mellitus, kidney / liver / metabolic disorders, HIV or AIDS, cancer, and the morbidly obese.
When?
You should get the vaccine as soon as it is available – usually starting in September – so you are protected if the season arrives early. Flu can occur at any time, but the season typically occurs between October and May with the most activity in January and February. If you do not get vaccinated in the fall season, you can still benefit from a flu vaccination into January.
