A New Millennium
Our Urgent Care Centers offer ready access to healthcare services when hospital emergency departments or primary care physicians are out of reach. Each center is accredited and fully equipped with on-site laboratory, X-ray technology, and board-certified physicians, in order to offer the highest quality treatment for a wide range of injury and illness.
Hospital ERs are often overwhelmed with a large volume of patients seeking care, creating long wait times and a high cost for services. Of those patients filling emergency department waiting rooms, approximately 84% do not have life-threatening emergencies and could be effectively treated in an alternate setting, like a regular doctor's office or urgent care center. Access to a primary care physicians can be difficult due to limited office hours and a nation-wide shortage of doctors. This is especially true in south Louisiana and Mississippi where many doctors have evacuated in the aftermath of hurricanes.
By its nature, urgent care is intended for isolated medical events and is not meant to compete with the continuous care offered by primary care physicians. Rather, urgent care physicians work cooperatively with primary care doctors and refer all patients who require necessary follow-up. Urgent Care Centers also utilize emergency departments to treat any patients with life-threatening symptoms.
Our Katrina Story
In August 2005, the New Orleans community was scattered across the country after evacuating for Hurricane Katrina. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, there was almost no healthcare available in the metro area with the exception of three hospitals that worked under challenging conditions with a limited staff in order to care for very ill.
Dr. Gerald Cvitanovich returned after the storm to help at East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) emergency department, but was asked by EJGH administration to instead concentrate his efforts on re-opening East Jefferson After Hours, the urgent care center Dr. Cvitanovich had previously established in Kenner. Announcements were made to the to urgent care staff via radio and television and soon, the employee-family began their return to help in the relief effort.
Only 8 days post-Katrina, East Jefferson After Hours was the first local medical facility to re-open despite having no running water, electricity, or phone service. The center was quickly overwhelmed with community members seeking medical care. The staff worked diligently to treat injury and illness, as well as administer 7,000 Tetanus, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B vaccines all free of charge. Fortunately the facility had little damage, and the staff was happy to be in a position to perform this community service.
Our efforts would not have been possible without the help of the Arkansas National Guard who assisted at our facility and stayed with us for a month. Some of the guardsmen provided security, and others, who were trained Paramedics/EMTs, assisted in the center. We are forever grateful for their partnership and will never forget their contributions!
